Our organization began as The Amherst Township Historical Society, which was incorporated on March 21st, 1973. Our name later changed to Cumberland County Museum and Archives, and then Cumberland Museum Society, to better reflect our representation of and commitment to the people and culture of Cumberland County as a whole. The building that currently houses the Cumberland County Museum and Archives was purchased in 1980, and was formally opened to the public as a museum on September 1981.
